What is an In-Law Suite?
An in-law suite is a small addition to an existing home that serves as a residential space for extended family or visitors. This space usually has a living area, small kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. They are typically located on the second floor of an existing home, towards the rear of the home, or over the garage. Some homeowners choose to install a shared doorway between the main house and in-law suite for easy access, however, some prefer to keep both residences completely separate.
An in-law suite is not always occupied by a permanent houseguest. An in-law suite can serve as a guest house, giving occasional visitors their own space. This is an excellent option for families who like to host visitors but still enjoy their own space.
