8 People, You’ll Find at Every Holiday Party

It’s here… The 2021 Holiday Party Season! While at each party you are guaranteed to see ugly sweaters, Christmas lights, cookies, hot cocoa, and more…you will also find 8 types of holiday party goers.

During the holiday season, weekends are typically spent trying to remain calm in the Target parking lot and hopping from one-holiday party to the next. Whether you love them or you hate them, you’re bound to attend one (or 12 during the season). Whether it’s a company or neighborhood party, there are 9 types of people you’ll find at EVERY HOLIDAY PARTY. So, the next time you dig out your ugly sweater in 80-degree weather (gotta love Florida) just look around and you will see the…

  • Fantic Host
  • Already Had a Few too Many when they Arrive
  • Brings Their Kids
  • Doesn’t Want to Be There
  • Christmas Obsessed
  • Great Debater
  • Non-StopTalker
  • New Friend

1. The Frantic Host

The whole idea behind hosting a Christmas party is to get everyone together, celebrate the holidays, enjoy good food and great company. However, there’s always that one host who acts like a celebrity will be in attendance. It’s as if they’ve convinced themselves if anything goes wrong, they’ll be banished from hosting parties ever again. They spend the evening rushing from room to room, forgetting to eat or drink, stopping only to ask others if this is the worst party they’ve ever been to.

Be a good guest and…remind your frantic host they are doing an excellent job! Point out that people are having a merry time, pass them a shot, and encourage them to mingle.

2. The One Who’s Already Had a Few too Many when they Arrive

We’ve all got that one friend who loves to pregame any occasion. Nooooo holiday party is complete without someone who is stumbling and singing Christmas carols as they walk through the front door.

You should…greet these inebriated guests with grace (a glass of water & a plate of food), and know that their antics will probably end around 9:30 when you find them passed out in the front yard.

3. Those Who Bring Their Kids

Bringing your kids is clearly okay when it’s a family party, but we’re talking about the parties that are adult-only. There’s always that one couple that thinks their little one is mature enough to attend the party with the grown-ups. Also, sometimes life happens, a last-minute babysitter cancellation or family emergency means bringing the kids in order not to miss the party.

In this situation…take a plate full of goodies into a room and pop in a movie for their entertainment.

4. The One Who Doesn’t Want to Be There

Somehow, people who prefer to avoid the holidays and social events, wind up attending anyways. Typically it’s because they don’t want to hurt the host’s feelings, have been dragged by a significant other, or are trying to impress the boss. Unfortunately, their resting Grinch face says it all!

Don’t take it personally…there could be a multitude of reasons why they aren’t in the holiday spirit. Instead of writing them off as Scrooge, initiate conversation and make them feel welcome.

5. The Christmas Obsessed One

You know the ONE we’re talking about! This person has an attic FULL of Christmas decorations they put up the morning of Thanksgiving. The one who waits all year to rock their ornament earrings and a Christmas tree sweater that lights up! They live for the Christmas season and holiday parties! Making it to every single holiday event they’re invited to (even the some they aren’t) this person is full of Christmas spirit!

Simply welcome them with open arms! They’re a joy to be around, and will possibly even take over your responsibilities as a host allowing you to enjoy the party!

6. The Great Debater

Yep, we are talking about that guy who turns every conversation into a controversial debate about politics or religion. Or that lady who hops from person to person, spreading gossip. Let’s not forget the one who judges other people from across the room and makes Christmas feel like middle school prom…awkward!

Take them with a grain of salt. Simply state that you need to use the restroom, this is a great out of the conversation!

7. The One who Loves to Talk, Talk, Talk

Talking is clearly a must at any party, but were talking about the one who says it all. Others are barely able to get in a word because this guest is like the energizer bunny. Either way, finding yourself cornered with Chatty Cathy Or Talkative Ted can quickly dampen your holiday spirit. Practice a few kind, but assertive phrases to help end the conversation. If they don’t get the hint and keep blabbin’, politely excuse yourself anyway.

Be a good listener, but don’t feel obligated to spend the entire party looking at their 293 pictures of cats on their Instagram feed or listening to the details of their wedding.

8. The New Friend

If you can leave a holiday party with one new friend, you can consider your holiday season a success. Meeting new people, networking, and building new relationships is one of the best parts of going to a holiday party. If you see someone looking lonely or intimidated at your next gathering, make the first move and reach out to them. Who knows, you could really hit it off! Or they could be super weird, but still, give it a try.

This season, consider every holiday party invitation you get as a reminder that you have people in your life that love you, care about you and enjoy your company. May your holiday season be filled with mistletoe, ugly sweaters, and new friends.
